Ryan is a happy individual who likes to have a laugh and a joke with his friends, he is incredibly smart gaining A grades all through high school however hid the fact that he was smart well as he wanted to play his part of the class clown to his friends so that he wouldn't lose his friends because he was so smart. Ryan is also incredibly loyal if he finds the person worthy of his friendship if he doesn't find them worthy then he doesn't try with that person. He can also have a very short temper, if someone is trying to make a fool out of him or hurt someone that he cares for then he react without weighing up the consequences of his actions. He is also very loyal to the people that he judges worthy of his loyalty, it is not easy to gain his trust however and it normally takes a long time to gain his trust but once you have gained his trust and loyalty he will defend you to the end of the earth.
Ryan also will leap before he looks in the sense that he will often act before thinking a plan through if he believes that his friends are in danger, this is often his heart over ruling his head and his loyalty overruling his brains. This could lead to a situation that could become fatal to Ryan if he doesn’t think a plan through
Ryan Goodnite was born to Rose Goodnite in 1983 in Houston Texas. Ryan had been the product of a one night stand Rose had in college. Rose however stubbornly refused to give up her son which caused her to argue with her parents and not talk to them through the term of her pregnancy. Rose died in childbirth giving birth to what she called her miracle boy. She hadn’t believed that Ryan would survive childbirth with the stress she was under of not talking to her parents and a full college course, however she gave birth to her beautiful baby boy, her own heart however gave out and she died. Jack and Ava where then left with a dilemma, their daughter was dead and had left a poor grandson with no known father, Ava instantly didn’t want to look after her daughter’s bastard child, Jack however was persistent and told her that they had to look after him, he was one of them. A Goodnite.
In Ryan’s early years he was happy bright child that everyone who met him loved. He loved his grandparents very much and never really questioned why his own father wasn’t around to raise him, after all he didn't need him. Through elementary school Ryan was shown to be extremely bright and had a knack for history, his favourite topic was the first and second world wars. When he was 11 it appeared that heart problems ran in the family as his grandmother Ava had a heart attack after watching him hit a home run at a little league game. The match had been a tense one and Ryan had been one of the last people to bat. After rushing her to the hospital they realised that Ava had a hereditary heart condition which had caused the heart attack and could have been the same reason why her daughter had died. Ava had another heart attack a week later and died.
Neither Jack or Ryan knew what to do without the figurehead of the family being gone. Even though Ryan had been more scared of his grandfather who was a tall and imposing man anyone who knew the old couple knew that Ava was the one in the marriage that wore the pants in the relationship between Jack and Ava. When Ryan started high school he met his soon to be best friend Samantha Tate. Samantha who preferred to be called Sammi was 6 months younger than Ryan who looked out for her like a best friend and older brother. Ryan had always thought of Sammi’s father as a weird man as he always went hunting big game but Ryan never knew what it was that he had hunted as Sammi never told him and would dismiss the question. When Ryan was a senior in high school he began dating Sammi like many people had expected including Jack and Sammi’s father. Jack at the time was 71 years old and looked nearly 90 if that was possible. Ryan always made time for his grandfather though, as did Sammi and Jack and Ryan where always welcome at the Tate home for dinner anytime.
Ryan and Sammi both got high scores on the SAT that year, Sammi scored a 230 and Ryan scored a 240 which he teased her about mercilessly about for weeks afterwards. They had both agreed to go to Harvard as they both got in, Sammi on a law course and Ryan on a history course with a football scholarship. Sammi’s father however didn't want her to go to college claiming it was too far away and he wouldn’t allow it. Sammi had picked up all of her clothes and left and was on her way to stay with Ryan when she was attacked and killed by a vampire. Ryan had been called to the hospital when Sammi had arrived there as she had listed him on her people to call if she was ever in an accident as had he. However the road was wet through rain and a speeding Ryan crashed his own motorbike causing his scar which he has across his face as his helmet had smashed and a long piece of glass had become embedded in his face.
Ryan was then in a coma for a little over four months, when he woke up the last thing he remembered was the day before his accident. Jack and Sammi’s father Mark filled him in on everything that had happened between those dates. Then Mark dropped a bombshell, that a vampire had been the reason for Sammi’s death, she had been targeted because of him, he was a vampire hunter and they had killed Sammi because he had killed a nest of vampires three weeks before which had been why he hadn’t wanted Sammi to go to Harvard with Ryan.
Ryan then made Mark teach him everything he knew about vampires, how they survived, how to kill them and what could weaken them. Ryan then hunted down vampires to try and find the vampire that killed the girl that he could have ended up marrying. He finally found the vampire in 2005 and killed it. Ryan had tracked it ironically to Harvard and weakened it with vervaine before tying it to a cross and leaving it in front of a church and waited for the sun.
In 2007 a considerably weaker Jack Goodnite finally died in his sleep at the age of 77. Ryan who had been on a hunt at the time had returned to bury his grandfather, that was the first time since he had learnt Sammi had died that he had openly cried, now he was the only Goodnite left, the legacy lived and died with him when he died unless he married. After the start of the apocalypse Ryan had been trying to help people no matter how hard it was, after seeing a child slain in front of him by a demon who he had tried to save he begged for help from heaven and the archangel Azrael answered and gave him the oppurtunity to be his vessel which he accepted.
