It seemed that even as a human she couldn’t get away from serving someone, but this time she hoped that the Goddess was true to her word, one favor and then she could seek out her fate in the world. Everything seemed so much more overwhelming in this new form. She remembered some of what it meant to be human when she was before but centuries as a demon had faded those memories into hazy photographs in her mind. There was a sense of fear about her, afraid of a world where her body wouldn’t react in the way she had honed it to over the years. No longer could she simply crush bones with her bare hands or move objects with her mind if she wanted to, all that was gone with the gift of a human body back. There was a part of her that idly wondered if she should do the favor asked for by Bast then seek out a crossroads as fast as she could but she shook that thought away, perhaps as a human, with a soul, she’d have a chance at forgiveness which she knew as a demon was lost to her. Hunters didn’t kill humans right? She looked up at the bar again, knowing a drink might do her nerves good, she finally stepped inside. Her dark eyes scanned the room a moment, wary for dangers that might lurk in the shadows. There was no telling who might know she was back and who would take advantage of her being venerable. As she walked up to the bar she stopped a moment, eyeing the payphone towards the back. If there was one thing she was sure of it was that she still knew Sam’s number but opening that can of worms, would it even be wise right now? No, not yet, take a moment to try to see what else you can think of first is the only excuse she could come up with. She knew she needed friends and had burned all the bridges she could in the past. Finally she stepped up to the bar, ordering a whiskey strait up. { made by thesintax @ livejournal, please leave this credit intact }

“How are you holding up, sweetie?”
There was no rustle of air. No pause in the activity of the bar. No, but a woman suddenly sat beside Ruby as if she’d been there the whole time. No one flinched. The man who had been beside the empty seat didn’t even appear to notice its sudden occupant. The woman was in a long, blue dress. She had some blue eye shadow and her black hair hung down. It was awfully puffy, but she didn’t mind. Usually the Goddess had her hair wrapped with some intricate design, though this was not befitting for interacting with humans. She was no longer in Ancient Egypt.
Bast gazed at Ruby with a hint of sympathy in her violet eyes. She felt the poor girl missed the hunter they were seeking out, and even loved him just a bit. She was aware that Ruby was seeking forgiveness as well as finishing the assignment Bast had given her. As a messenger, Bast was to relay a message from Jove to Sam about Lucifer wanting his body for a vessel. They were on a tight schedule. Ever since Lucifer had gotten free Bast had been pushed harder to locate the Winchester. She figured there was an angel watching over him and his brother and keeping them safe. It was quite a challenge to locate him.
“Don’t drink too much,” Bast warned tenderly. She purred as her gaze grew softer, “we don’t need any hangovers tomorrow, and I know how humans are. They’re prone to them.” She laughed quietly, “It’s a tight ship running right now. There’s certainly a lot going on.” Like the Watchers. Bast hadn’t expected them to return any time soon. It was both a shock and a pain to realize they had survived Yahweh’s Great Flood. From what the messenger knew they were after the Akashic Records. Those were the very same records the Archangel Ramiel watched over. Bast was quite fond of him, oh yes, she loved them angels.

She didn’t turn her head to the voice or even act surprised at the abrupt entrance, years of being her own brand of creature told her that jumping at such things simply weren’t done and to really expect them to happen. She simply inclined her head to Bast, showing a proper respect to the Goddess which had granted her life and a chance at redemption. “My Lady.” How did she even begin to explain it to the Goddess about the plethora of emotions that ran though her at the thought of simply seeing Sam again? Had she been putting off finding him, perhaps. It might have been as easy for her as picking up a payphone and dialing his number but she didn’t know how she’d react to hearing his voice again. She also lived in fear of delivering the message to him that not only had her deception let loose Lucifer on the world but now he was the vessel for the fallen angel and going to have to fight against saying yes to him. Her heart ached for him and she wished now she had never consented to this mission if only to save him heartache. All these swirling emotions, no wonder Dean drank. “I was only going to have this one Lady then I think if I follow this lead on demons taking women locally I’ll find the Winchesters.” It was a safe bet that Sam and Dean would be on the trail of anything abducting women, especially Dean, he loved saving damsels in distress. She shot back the drink, a bitter look crossing her features as she tossed down a few bills to pay for it, rising to her feet. { made by thesintax @ livejournal, please leave this credit intact }

If there was something Bast understood well, then it was emotions. The Cat Goddess could act quite motherly if she felt the need to. It was a side of Bast's personality. There was that side, and then the fierce one that no one liked to meet. No one like a cat when it was angered. Their scathing glare was enough to cut a soul in half. The Goddess smiled at the thought and ran her fingers thoughtfully over her mouth. Then her attention returned to Ruby as she waved her hand dismissively. "Oh, dear, there's no need for formality. You can just call me Bast."
Bast disliked formalities. They made things complicated, and she liked things simple. It was simple to be a messenger as well. Find the individual, deliver the message, and leave. It wasn't her job for the person to take the message to heart; it was her job to deliver. That's why delivering a message to Sam Winchester was going to be easy once she found him. She didn't have to get it through his possibly thick skull that he needed to heed the message.
"Demons killing local women?" A brow rose at her, "and you want to go there? My, my I will have to keep my eye on you, won't I?" She smirked playfully and with a slight hint of affection, "though, if it will lead you to the Winchesters, then what can I do to stop you? I'll just stay close by in case they decide you're worth a strike at."
The last thing she wanted was for Ruby to die. Bast had just brought her back after all.

She gave Bast a half hearted smile at her words, taking some comfort in the fact that perhaps there was something more powerful looking over her shoulder now, a guardian. Of course the thing with Ruby is that she wouldn’t ask for help in this case, this was penance to her, this was her payment for having betrayed Sam, and it needed to hurt, it needed to be painful, because maybe then it would stop emotionally hurting inside so much. “I was raised to respect the Gods and Goddesses Lady, my mother would turn in her grave if she felt I did not live up to her expectations.” Which was true, in part, the other truth is the formality kept a distance to her, it kept her from caring. Well that was a lie, she did care, but she hoped that it would keep someone else from caring about her. She was sure she wasn’t long for the world in this body simply because she was sure that Sam would never take her back and without him there was no meaning to any of it. “I can take care of demons My Lady, I was one long enough and basic exorcisms are sort of burned into my brain. Besides in this body I have an advantage, they still fear the demon Ruby who opened Hell. When I find Sam I will call upon you Lady and then…” She let it trail off at that, knowing what the message would do to Sam and praying, yes praying, she would be able to somehow help him. { made by thesintax @ livejournal, please leave this credit intact }

Ah, it was always the devout parents that upheld such annoying formality. Bast couldn't care less if her mother turned in her grave simply because she wished to be called by name rather than a title. Her mother could get over it, but Bast remained quiet. If Ruby insisted on it, then she would accept it, though unwillingly. The Goddess cast a glance along the solemn bar; why did people drink? That was an interesting question that could delve deep into psychology or theory, but that wasn't Bast's cup of tea. She could imagine Jove discussing it for hours. That God was like a walking dictionary, thesaurus, atlas, and encyclopedia all wrapped into one body. He was a scholarly God and perhaps this is why he led them. She blinked her thoughts away. Those weren't questions she was permitted to ask or debate.
Her attention returned to Ruby right as her voice trailed off. Another glimmer of sympathy ran through the deity and she purred gently despite herself. No human was going to pay attention to her. There was no need to hide some of the odd things she could do. Bast was a watcher over domestic cats therefore she took on their qualities. Purring was one of the main things she found soothed an individual. The rumbling noise must've trigged something in them, though Bast was unsure of what. She simply hoped that the soothing sound would have the same effect on Ruby.
"I will await your call," she said, apparently having heard Ruby even when spacing out or simply being a good guesser. "Until then, I'll be around...though invisible, and sometimes I'll be off attending to other matters." She had an investigation of her own to carry out. Her job was not a 'one message at a time' kind of job. In fact, she was somewhat behind on schedule and was nervous to report in. Jove was a kind deity, and a patient one, but she still felt nervous. Bast hated disappointments and she hated to disappoint. It was time for her to get her tail in gear and get her job done. She felt like a bad secretary or something. Bast smiled, "I cannot fall behind on my other chores, after all."

Her eyes went to the payphone in the corner one last time, she could hear his voice on the other end of the phone like a ghost haunting her memories. She could hear his voice from when he had first lost Dean and had slowly come around to wanting her around, calling her to ask her to come by his room, that soft quiver when he said her name, how he stammered a little thought the request before she took him off the hook and said she would be by soon. She also remembered the times he called her needing his fix, in the throws of his addiction and her blood what he needed to get by. Then there were the times he just wanted to talk to her and she lay there in bed listening to him tell her stories about his time with Dean, his growing up, school, his dog, what ever he wanted to go on and on about, loving just hearing his voice. Now it was all up to her, she had to find him again and help deliver a message that would change his entire life, ruin it probably and make him have to make a horrible choice. The thing is she would not trade places with this duty for anything because soon she knew her name would be on his lips again and maybe his arms around her. “Of course My Lady, as soon as I find Sam I will call you.” { made by thesintax @ livejournal, please leave this credit intact }

There wasn't much left for Bast to be around for. The deity glanced around one final time before giving Ruby a smile of farewell. "I believe you," she said, "and will be nearby as usual, but I will leave you to your work for now." She stood and gave a small bow. There were others perhaps coming to keep Ruby company. Bast had other matters to attend to for the time being.
Without a sound, like when she'd come, Bast was gone. No one but Ruby would notice her absence.Where Bast was? No one could say for sure. She could simply be invisible and watching over Ruby, or she could've been on the other side of the planet. One does not know with cats...
